Best in Show: Empowering Students with Open Source Tools
Magnolia Independent School District – Magnolia, Texas

Starting off with a table discussion of the uses of open source software/tools being used in the classroom right now… successes, struggles, etc.

Many open source tools can be run from a USB versus installing on the local machine

Microsoft/Apple licensing versus free licensing… the savings could be tremendous

Open source is how it was developed, “check my code and give me feedback” – freeware and malware is the bad stuff, “free music, free downloads that often contain code that embeds into the local machine”

Some of the best free open source software out right now
 – Joomla – web application
 – Open Office – office suite
 – Ubuntu – desktop
 – Moodle – course management system (CMS)

Free open source software can be manipulated by the local technology departments, hence the value of open source
